The forecast was N-NE force 5-7. That's what we got, just a lot more of
the 7 and less of the 5. Occasional puffs of 8.
Set off at 08.30 with double reefed main and No4 sized genoa.
Beam/broad reach down to NE Gunfleet. Benefits of Sprayhoods and (working)
GPS demonstrated when Mrs. C obliged to turn back due to lack of either.
Once in Swin, wind and seas behind, tide with us so progress was fast and
spectacular. Bit disconcerting initially to see neighbouring boats
disappear behind waves and only see mast from cross trees up, but passage was
quick and once behind Swallow tail, seas began to ease.
Extraordinary seamanship demonstrated on Full Circle by Paul as he went up on
foredeck to fix furling gear (ably vocally encouraged by Sharon) and Mike who
was quietly progressing single-handed on Freydis.
Arrived and secured at Burnham Yacht Harbour at 14.30 following an
exhilarating trip having seen max wind speed 36 knots, max boat speed 9 knots
(isn't surfing fun?) and max ground speed 11 knots.
Unfortunately, no photographs as we were all to busy hanging on, as borne out
by the fingernail marks on Full Circle's coachroof but we all got there safe and
sound with no recorded losses, save one breakfast on Levanter!
Appropriately admonished for foolhardiness and putting everyone's life at
risk, including Ocean Yachtmaster with 40 years experience, (how stupid was
that?), thought best to keep
low profile, repair to the town for a well earned(?) pint and curry!
Photos below of return trip next day which just goes to emphasise the speed
at which the sea can change!
